School of Soft Goods: Demystifying Pillow Finishes
by Jenny Kramer on Apr 25, 2025
A picture tells a thousand stories, and we figured they could also explain our pillow finishes much more adequately than words.
Knife Edge:
No finish treatment is added into the seam in between front of pillow and back of pillow:
Self WELT: A Welt is a cord covered in fabric that is added into the seam. Self Welt means the fabric over that cord material is the same fabric that is on the front (or "face") of the pillow.
Contrast WELT: The cording is covered in a fabric that is in contrast or different from the front face of the pillow fabric. It can be a solid color contrast welt or a contrast pattern.
Self FLANGE: Flange is the 1" folded and finished piece of material that projects out of the seam around the pillow between the front fabric and the back fabric. It is called SELF flange when it is made out of the same fabric as the front (or "face") of the pillow.
Contrast Flange: When the 1" flange of fabric is made out of a different fabric than the front (or "face") of the pillow. It can be a solid color or a pattern. It can be the same as the back fabric, however, and still be called contrast flange.
Ruffle Edge / Ruffle Finish: There is a ruffle in between the front and pack fabric of the pillow. It can be "self" or "contrast" fabric. We can do varying sizes of ruffles, from 1/2" to 4" (for the super floppy, girly look)
Cord in seam: This is when we use a pre-made cord that is applied in the seam, between the front and the back of the pillow. It is usually solid, but sometimes has multiple colors in it.
